Open doors + special guest: Roger Willems
Every month on Thursday De Monsterkamer organises a Open doors + special guest. This time, we invited Roger Willems.
- Date: 03/11/2016
- Time: 17:00 - 20:00
- Location: De Monsterkamer
- Speaker: Roger Willems
- Organiser: Philip Stroomberg en Justina Nekrašaitė
Roger Willems (1969) is founding director of Roma Publications, which he started in 1998 together with artists Mark Manders and Marc Nagtzaam. Since then, Roma Publications has been expanding in an informal way as an international platform for production and distribution of art publications, made in close collaboration with a growing number of artists, designers, curators, writers and poets, creating a series of 290 publications by the end of 2016.
During his lecture at De Monsterkamer he will discuss his position as designer-publisher by giving a short overview of his activities for Roma Publications from 1998 till today, to end with recent examples of books made in collaboration with artists. By paying special attention to the object quality of the book, Willems explores paper as a space to experience art and photography, like a portable exhibition space.
Besides designing a majority of the books he publishes, Willems also curates book-related exhibitions. Recent examples are Artists’ Documents: Art, Typography and Collaboration at the MMCA in Seoul (2016) and Roma Publications 1998-2014 at Fondazione Giuliani in Rome (2014).
