Mariska’s contribution to the Open Doors might be a surprising one: she will speak about new media.

The secret is to keep moving!
New media connects: there is no war between the online and the printed, it is mixing the two that brings exiting new challenges. Adding QR-codes and Layar makes printed matter interactive. This is Calff & Meischke’s 100th year of business; today they have unlocked the mysteries of image codes and have found ways to generate new clients through social media platforms. Last year Calff has developed a successful app to guide beginning designers to quality print work.
“Designer Joke Mestdag convinced me in 2010 to start a blog and open a Twitter account for Calff & Meischke. I didn’t regret this a single moment, in fact, it has been a tremendous benefit to us.”
Social media use in the Graphic Industry
Mariska Bijl knows what’s up: she has been a part of the graphic industry for 25 years now. Many a novice designer has been educated by her on how to prepare files for print. Colourmanagement is her expertise: the difference between what you see on a screen and how that is printed. Recently she has been teaching courses in social media where she explains about the personal, business, commercial and social uses of platforms such as Blogspot, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and Pinterest. The latter two in particular offer unexpected opportunities for designers and printers.
“Esther has asked me to contribute to the Open Doors event by explaining a bit more about how printers and designers could benefit from the use of social media for their businesses. I think this is a great idea and I will be focusing on Pinterest in particular; I think this platform has many possibilities, especially for designers.”
Examples of Markiska’s lithographical portfolio with Calff & Meischke include: books for KesselsKramer, Koos Breukel, Charlotte Dumas, Hansje van Halem, Rene Knip, Chris Berens, Hans Eijkelboom, The Royal Palace, Willem van Zoetendaal, Jopie Huisman Museum, Julie Born, Rijskmuseum, Literary covers for Adriaan van Dis and Oek de Jong among others. Brochures for clothing chain Pauw and of course the famous Hotel Costes book by Arno Nollen.
“Thursday 7 November is on the schedule, I’ll definitely bring the Hotel Costes book and I’ll show how the strength of the book combines with social media.”
