Open doors + special guest: Kirsten Algera
De Monsterkamer hosts an Open Doors + Special Guest every first Thursday of the month. For the next event on July 2nd, we invited Kirsten Algera.
- Date: 02/07/2015
- Time: 17:00 - 20:00
- Location: De Monsterkamer
- Speaker: Kirsten Algera
- Costs: Free
Kirsten Algera is a design historian and lecturer based in Amsterdam. She is conducting PhD research at the University of Amsterdam concerning graphic design and subcultures in The Netherlands and initiated various (graphic) projects in The Netherlands and abroad. Together with Ernst van der Hoeven she recently founded ‘MacGuffin’, a platform and magazine about the use of everyday life objects that was praised in international reviews as an ‘imaginative, impeccably researched and irresistible design and crafts magazine’.
July 2nd Kirsten will be talking about the making of a printed biannual in an era of digital everything. She will elaborate on the background of MacGuffin and the shifting role of the designer, putting forward that design should focus less on new products and innovation, and more on relationships and ‘afterlife’.
Since 1992, Kirsten Algera worked as a design expert for various organisations in The Netherlands such as the Mondrian Foundation, VPRO Broadcasting Company and Royal Dutch Post. Currently she advises the Dutch government on design as a member of the Council for Culture.
In 2002, she started as head of the Graphic Design Department at HKU University of the Arts in Utrecht. Ever since she lectures on graphic design and design research in Utrecht and has presented on graphic design at art academies throughout the world, like Cal Arts Los Angeles and Bilgi University Istanbul. As a lecturer, she emphasizes that in design ‘content = context’.
The lecture will be in Dutch. Registration for the event is not required. Afterwards you can join us for dinner at Studio/K (at your own costs). Looking forward to seeing you on July the 2nd.
The activities program of De Monsterkamer is supported by Creative Industries Fund NL.
