Open doors + special guest: Jeroen Kummer (Kummer & Herrman)
De Monsterkamer hosts an Open Doors event every first Thursday of the month. Special Guest for the upcoming event on 05 March 2015 is Jeroen Kummer (1969), founding partner of the design office Kummer & Herrman.
- Date: 05/03/2015
- Time: 17:00 - 20:00
- Location: De Monsterkamer
- Costs: Free
- Speaker: Jeroen Kummer
Kummer & Herrman have been involved in various commissioned works and productions, ranging from books and online documentaries to exhibition designs. The presentation will address the following questions: what is the specific value of the book as a physical object at the interface of digital and printed productions? What does it allow the designer to convey? What role does paper as material play in the creative process and what are the considerations that guide the appropriate choices? What does this in turn reveal about the value of the corporeal presence of books in an increasingly digitised world? If books made of paper will not disappear, what exactly will make them indispensable and desirable?

Kummer & Herrman is an internationally recognised creative company founded in 1998 by Arthur Herrman and Jeroen Kummer. With a team of six professionals and in collaboration with a large network of specialists, they design books, exhibitions, online documentaries, campaigns and visual identities, commissioned both at home and abroad.
Their method of working is characterised by a strong editorial engagement. In their own words, “K&H design stories”. A story might consist of a short-term account, as specific to a campaign or an exhibition. It might also refer to a long-term scenario with a broad range of applications, such as a corporate visual identity. Design is thus far more than just a matter of looking good. It needs to complement and highlight an underlying narrative, without simultaneously overruling it. The subject of design needs to be charged with the precise energy required to bring it to life and retain the element of surprise.
The lecture will be held in English. Registration for the event is not required. Afterwards you can join us for dinner at Studio/K (at your own costs). Looking forward to see you on March the 5th.
The activities program of De Monsterkamer is supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL.
