Open doors + special guest: Renate Boere
Every first Thursday of the month De Monsterkamer organises an Open Doors + special guest event. This time we have invited Renate Boere (1970). Studio Renate Boere has worked for the cultural sector for 20 years, and has designed more than 65 books together with artists.
- Date: 01/06/2017
- Time: 17:00 - 20:00
- Location: De Monsterkamer
- Speaker: Renate Boere
- Organiser: Philip Stroomberg and Justina Nekrašaitė
- Costs: Free
During her presentation at De Monsterkamer, Renate Boere will discuss the journalistic novel Ik vraag u iets meer lef te tonen (I ask that you show a little more courage).
After rarely coming across meaningful social design solutions, Renate Boere decided to start a project of her own and to simultaneously write about it. This brought her into a completely new world of confidentiality agreements, copyright, complex contracts, partnerships with very diverse stakeholders, subsidy applications, hybrid publishing and even winning international awards.
Her extensive research and conclusions are revealed in the journalistic novel Ik vraag u iets meer lef te tonen. It is a must-have for students, recent graduates and everyone who wishes to initiate a project of their own. Her motto is: “Hybrid (graphic) design is a weapon in the struggle against stagnation and decay and a catalyst for dynamism and progress”. The physical book is one part of a hybrid publication; another is the Studio Renate Boere Method, which can be found here (in Dutch).
During the coming year, this platform will provoke discussion and interaction with other designers. In this way, we will together create a valuable document for students, recent graduates and everyone who wishes to initiate a project.

Studio Renate Boere regularly works together with artists. The most recent collaboration was with the artist Lizan Freijsen, which resulted in the book design for The Living Surface. This is a beautiful example of a design that reveals the artist’s working methods.
The extensive monograph Sproken, Christie van der Haak, draws you into the artist’s colourful world of experience. The book design won awards at both the European Design Awards and the International Design Awards.
Studio Renate Boere is a design studio that explores the newest working practices in the field of graphic design. The studio prefers to work in partnership with businesses, agencies and governments, artists and students to develop innovative products that contribute to a sustainable society. In addition to commissioned graphic design work, the studio also develops interactive installations, hybrid publishing and self-initiated products. Research into the newest social media channels to create visibility for these innovative products is an important part of their work.
The lecture will be in Dutch, but we can switch to English if required. You are welcome to join us for dinner afterwards at Studio/K at your own costs. Looking forward to seeing you 1st of June!
